Glow Deep Serum: Rice + Arbutin
A watery brightening serum that is mostly rice bran water, with 2% alpha-arbutin and niacinamide for dullness, uneven tone and leftover marks.
Buyer verdictA gentle, well-priced first brightening serum, especially for sensitive skin that can't take vitamin C or acids. If dark spots are your main worry, the Anua niacinamide + TXA serum is stronger. Seoul beats Amazon US on the same 30ml bottle.

What it is
Glow Deep Serum is Beauty of Joseon’s brightening serum, and the purple-capped sister of its propolis Glow Serum. It comes in a 30ml dropper bottle and has a thin, almost water-like texture.
The Korean ingredient list is unusually open about amounts. Rice bran water makes up 68.6% of the formula, ahead of purified water. Alpha-arbutin is listed at 2%, followed by niacinamide, panthenol and trehalose. Near the bottom is a short “grain” blend of extracts: Job’s tears, black bean, barley, black sesame, wheat, mung bean and corn. The rice extract itself is listed at just 2 ppm, so it’s the rice water that does the work, not the extract.
Korea registers it as a functional cosmetic for brightening.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- Your skin looks dull or uneven and you want a first, gentle brightening step
- You have red or brown marks left after breakouts
- Vitamin C or acid serums sting or break you out
Skip it if
- You have stubborn sun spots or melasma and want the strongest over-the-counter option
- You want a hydrating serum first; this one is light on moisture
- You already use a high-strength arbutin or niacinamide serum; doubling up adds little
What the ingredients do
Alpha-arbutin is a more stable form of arbutin, a molecule found naturally in bearberry. It slows down tyrosinase, the enzyme skin uses to make pigment, so dark spots fade gradually and new ones are less likely to settle. At 2% it’s effective without being harsh.
Niacinamide works in a different way: it reduces how much pigment moves up into the surface cells. It also calms redness and supports the barrier. Pairing it with arbutin is a sensible combination, because the two tackle pigment at different stages.
Rice bran water gives the serum its softness. Rice has a long history in Korean beauty, and the water conditions skin and leaves a smooth finish. It’s a pleasant base rather than a proven brightener on its own. Panthenol, trehalose and glyceryl glucoside keep the formula hydrating enough for daily use.
How to use it
After cleansing and toner, press 2 to 3 drops into the face, morning and evening, then follow with moisturiser. Beauty of Joseon’s directions add the obvious but important step: sunscreen during the day. Without it, any brightening serum is fighting a losing battle.
You can apply it all over, or put an extra layer on the areas with marks.
How it compares
Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum is the stronger choice for dark spots, with tranexamic acid and much more niacinamide, but it’s more likely to tingle. Axis-Y Dark Spot Correcting Glow Serum is a similar mid-strength option with a more glowy finish. Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C Serum brightens with vitamin C instead, if your skin is fine with it.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
Yes. Olive Young sells the same 30ml bottle that Amazon US lists, and the Seoul price is usually lower, more so when Olive Young runs a promotion. Amazon UK mostly sells a 50ml bottle, which our price box compares per ml.
At the regular Seoul price, one bottle clears the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum. On sale it can drop just below, so buy it with something else on the same receipt to be safe.
FAQ
How much arbutin is in it?
The Korean label lists alpha-arbutin at 2%, which is a common, well-tolerated strength for a daily serum.
Does it contain fragrance or acids?
No fragrance or essential oils are listed, and there are no exfoliating acids or vitamin C. That's why it's often recommended for sensitive skin.
How long until I see results?
Brightening ingredients work slowly. Give it 6 to 8 weeks of daily use, with sunscreen every morning, before judging it.
Can I use it with vitamin C or retinol?
Yes. It's mild and layers easily. Apply the stronger active first, or use them at different times of day.
