Our price verdict

From the UK, it's 29% cheaper in Seoul.

Seoul packs often add a bonus (+20ml); we don't count it in the saving.

What it is

Relief Sun is Beauty of Joseon’s daily sunscreen and probably the most talked-about Korean sunscreen of the last few years. It is rated SPF50+ PA++++ under Korean testing, comes in a 50ml tube, and feels closer to a light moisturiser than a typical sunscreen.

It solved the two complaints people have about sunscreen: white cast and greasiness. It goes on clear on every skin tone, does not sting eyes for most people and wears comfortably under makeup. Its price in Korea is low for a sunscreen of this quality.

Key ingredients in plain English

The protection comes from four modern filters: Uvinul A Plus (UVA), Uvinul T 150 (UVB), Tinosorb M (broad spectrum) and Uvasorb HEB (UVB). These are widely used in Korea, the EU and the UK but are not among the filters allowed in sunscreens made for the US market. Niacinamide and rice extracts add skincare benefits but are not the reason to buy it.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Great for dry, normal and sensitive skin, and anyone who has given up on sunscreen because of white cast. Very oily skin may find the finish too dewy by midday; try the Aqua-Fresh version or SKIN1004’s sun serum.

How to use it

As the last step of your morning routine, before makeup. Use a generous amount, about two finger-lengths for face and neck, and reapply during long days outdoors.

How it compares

Round Lab Birch Juice Sun Cream uses almost the same filter combination with a slightly more hydrating feel. Isntree’s Watery Sun Gel is lighter and more gel-like. Relief Sun is the safest first pick if you have never tried a Korean sunscreen.

Korea vs international version

Internationally the product has been renamed Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide. As far as we can tell from the brand’s listings, the formula is the same; the Korean box may still say Rice + Probiotics.

FAQ

Is it the same as Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide?

Yes. Beauty of Joseon now sells this sunscreen internationally under the Rice + Niacinamide name; it is the product originally called Rice + Probiotics.

Does it leave a white cast?

No. It uses only chemical (organic) UV filters, so it goes on clear.

Is it good for oily skin?

It has a dewy finish. Oily skin often prefers the Aqua-Fresh version, which is lighter and more matte.
