Madagascar Centella Ampoule
SKIN1004's flagship: a seven-ingredient centella ampoule with no fragrance, oils or actives, made to calm red, reactive or over-treated skin.
Buyer verdictOne of the simplest, safest serums you can buy for irritated or sensitive skin. Don't expect it to treat acne or dark spots. Seoul sells the 55ml bottle, so compare per ml against Amazon's 100ml.

What it is
The Madagascar Centella Ampoule is the product that built SKIN1004. It’s a clear, watery serum in a dropper bottle, and its whole appeal is restraint. The Korean label lists just seven ingredients: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, centella asiatica extract, 1,2-hexanediol, cellulose gum and ethylhexylglycerin.
There’s no fragrance, no essential oil, no acid and no niacinamide. That makes it one of the least likely serums to upset sensitive skin. It also means its job is narrow: calm and lightly hydrate, nothing more.
Olive Young’s standard listing is the 55ml bottle. SKIN1004 also makes 30ml and 100ml sizes, and Amazon mostly sells the 100ml.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- Your skin is red, reactive or stinging from too many actives
- You want a serum you can use alongside retinoids, acids or acne treatments
- You have sensitive or allergy-prone skin and want the shortest possible ingredient list
Skip it if
- You want visible results on dark spots, wrinkles or breakouts by itself
- Your skin is very dry and needs a richer, more hydrating serum
- You already use a centella toner or cream; doubling up adds little
What the ingredients do
Centella asiatica (also called cica or tiger grass) is one of the most popular calming ingredients in Korean skincare. Its compounds, including madecassoside, asiaticoside and asiatic acid, are linked to soothing irritation and supporting skin repair. SKIN1004 uses a centella extract from Madagascar, which is where the name comes from.
Glycerin and butylene glycol draw water into skin, so the ampoule feels hydrating even though it’s very light. Cellulose gum gives the liquid a little body so it doesn’t run off your face. 1,2-hexanediol and ethylhexylglycerin keep the formula preserved without classic preservatives.
The simplicity is the point. With so few ingredients, it’s easy to work out what your skin is reacting to if something goes wrong.
How to use it
After cleansing and toner, put 3 to 4 drops in your palm and press it over the face. It absorbs in seconds. Follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning. It’s gentle enough for morning and evening every day.
It’s useful as a buffer, too: apply it before a retinoid or acid serum on nights your skin feels sensitive. You can also use it as the only active-free step after over-exfoliating.
How it compares
Mixsoon Centella Asiatica Essence is the other famous minimal centella product, marketed as a single-ingredient centella essence. Anua Heartleaf 77 Toner gives a similar calming effect in toner form, if you’d rather soothe at the toner step.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
Usually yes, but compare per ml. The Olive Young bottle is 55ml and Amazon’s is 100ml, so the Seoul shelf price looks much lower than it is. Our price box adjusts for size. At its regular price the per-ml saving is modest. On promotion, which happens often, it’s a clear win.
At its usual sale price one bottle just clears the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum, so you get the refund even on a single bottle.
FAQ
Is it really 100% centella?
Not exactly. International labels list 'Centella Asiatica Extract' first because the extract is counted with the water it's made in. The Korean label splits that out, so water comes first and centella extract fourth. Ulta lists the centella at 1,000 ppm (0.1%). It's the same simple formula either way, just labelled differently.
Is it fragrance-free?
Yes. The Korean label lists only seven ingredients: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, centella extract, 1,2-hexanediol, cellulose gum and ethylhexylglycerin.
Will it clear my acne?
Not on its own. It can calm the redness and irritation around breakouts, and it pairs well with acne treatments, but it doesn't contain an acne-fighting active.
Can I use it after a laser or peel?
Many people use plain centella products in the recovery days, and this one has little to irritate. Follow your clinician's aftercare instructions first.
