What it is
Dynasty Cream (조선미녀크림 in Korean) is the product Beauty of Joseon relaunched itself with, years before its rice sunscreen went viral. It comes in a 50ml jar with a gold lid and has a soft, bouncy texture that melts into skin.
The name and packaging lean on “hanbang”, traditional Korean herbal skincare. The actual formula is a modern moisturiser. The top of the Korean ingredient list is water, glycerin, hydrogenated polydecene, niacinamide and squalane. That’s a hydrating base, a light emollient, a well-studied active and a skin-friendly oil. The hanbang ingredients, ginseng water, rice bran water and honey extract, appear further down.
Korea registers it as a functional cosmetic because it contains niacinamide (brightening) and adenosine (wrinkles).
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- You have normal, dry or combination skin and want one cream for morning and night
- You like a dewy, healthy-looking finish rather than matte
- You want a fragrance-free option that still feels pleasant to use
Skip it if
- You’re very oily or acne-prone and prefer gel moisturisers
- You have a compromised barrier and need something more targeted, like a ceramide-heavy cream
- You want strong anti-ageing actives; the adenosine and niacinamide here are supporting, not treatment-level
What the ingredients do
Niacinamide is the most useful active here, and it’s high on the list. Over weeks it helps even out skin tone, calm redness and support the skin barrier. It also pairs easily with almost anything else in a routine.
Squalane and hydrogenated polydecene are what make the cream feel rich without greasiness. Both are light emollients that smooth the surface and slow water loss. Safflower seed oil and hydrogenated coconut oil add a little more cushion.
Ginseng water and rice bran water give the product its identity, and they’re gentle conditioning ingredients. They’re not why the cream works, though. Ceramide NP, three forms of hyaluronic acid and honey extract appear near the end in small amounts.
Adenosine is the ingredient Korea’s regulator accepts for wrinkle-care claims. In a moisturiser it’s a nice extra, not a replacement for retinoids or sunscreen.
How to use it
Use it as the last skincare step: after cleansing, toner and any serum. A fingertip-sized scoop covers the face and neck. In the morning, let it settle for a minute before applying sunscreen.
At night it can be your only moisturiser, or you can layer it over a treatment serum. Because it has no fragrance and no acids, it sits comfortably on top of retinol, vitamin C or exfoliants.
How it compares
Aestura Atobarrier 365 is the pick for dry, sensitive or compromised skin. It’s more focused on ceramides and barrier repair, and less on glow. Round Lab Soybean Nourishing Cream is similar in richness, with a more nourishing, anti-ageing slant. S.Nature Aqua Squalane is lighter and better for combination skin in summer.
Dynasty Cream sits in the middle: richer than a gel, lighter than a barrier balm, with a glow the others don’t give.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
Yes, it’s a reliable pick. Olive Young sells the same 50ml jar as Amazon, so the comparison is direct, and it’s frequently on promotion in Korea. Even on sale, one jar usually clears the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum on its own.
It’s also a good gift. The jar looks premium, and fragrance-free formulas are a safer bet for someone whose skin you don’t know.
FAQ
Does it contain fragrance?
Not on the current Korean label. The full ingredient list on Olive Young has no fragrance or essential oils. The rice, ginseng and honey ingredients can give it a faint natural scent.
Is it heavy enough for winter?
For normal and combination skin, usually yes. Very dry skin may want to layer it over a hydrating serum, or use a richer barrier cream like Aestura at night.
Is it good under makeup and sunscreen?
Yes for most people. It sinks in to a dewy rather than greasy finish. Give it a minute before sunscreen so the layers don't pill.
Why is it called a functional cosmetic in Korea?
It contains niacinamide and adenosine, the ingredients Korea's regulator recognises for brightening and wrinkle claims. That's a registration category, not a guarantee of visible results.
